Water reuse and treatment

Rainwater is free and available in sufficient quantities. Sustainable use of water also means that rainwater should no longer be seen as waste, but as a source of water. So everyone benefits from investing in rainwater harvesting and reuse. Moreover, rainwater is even better than tap water for a number of applications. Rainwater is naturally soft as it does not contain lime like tap water. As a result, it is even better for the lifespan of appliances, pipes and taps.

Importance of good water management

A spike in rainwater can cause problems in urban areas. To increase the climate-adaptive capability of a city, the collection, treatment and reuse of rainwater is very important.

Good water management not only saves water but benefits the whole city. You can let rainwater infiltrate into the soil. Rainwater can also be stored in above-ground or underground tanks, but also in a pond, for example. By means of a pumping system, the rainwater can then be used again for an irrigation system, for example.

Retention, infiltration and drainage of rainwater

The urbanisation of the Netherlands limits the natural infiltration of rainwater into the ground. As a result, very large parts of our landscape consist of water-impermeable soils. This means rainwater flows directly into the sewer instead of naturally infiltrating the ground. Retention and or drainage plates can be used here to collect rainwater and allow it to flow delayed to the desired disconnection point. The retention and drainage plates are used on parking roofs, roof gardens and plazas. Drainage plates also offer a solution when groundwater levels are high.

Rainwater collection and reuse

Rainwater tanks provide temporary storage of rainwater to ensure sufficient rainwater is available in times of drought. It is usually assumed that a tank, when the cistern is full, should be able to meet the water needs for about 30 to 45 days. Choosing the right volume of rainwater tank is important for good water quality. A pump combined with a control system is an important part of a rainwater system. The pump handles the distribution of rainwater from the tank to the consumption points and the control system ensures an automatic switch to mains water in times of drought, for example.
